Delivering cost savings of £350,000 for a leading waste management company

Biffa Waste Services

The Client

Biffa is a waste management company headquartered in High Wycombe. It provides collection, treatment, recycling and technologically-driven energy generation services to industrial, commercial and public sector clients in the UK.

The Challenge

Biffa needed to generate accurate gas, electricity and fuel oil usage data across its portfolio of supplies to comply with environmental reporting legislation and they needed to do it quickly. Internally available data was incomplete and difficult to verify.

Why Smith Bellerby?

We are experts in managing utility data and working to tight deadlines. We provided much needed extra resources to Biffa in the form of experienced and skilled analysts. We spent several weeks working alongside Biffa’s purchase ledger team, collating data from invoices and compiling full evidence packs. Whilst completing the original project – on time and on budget – we typically went the extra mile. During the audit, we identified several cost-savings opportunities:

  • £27,400 of overcharges for one site with a complex series of credits & rebills.
  • £23,000 rebate on atypical & inaccurate usage data.

These savings covered our professional fees several times over and proved our credentials.

We went on to develop a business case for Biffa to support an ongoing Bureau Service for gas and electricity. Now in its third year, we receive all of Biffa’s energy bills, check them for accuracy and works with suppliers to sort out any billing or supply issues. The collection of accurate energy usage data with supporting evidence is still a key feature of the service, with monthly data uploads to Biffa’s carbon management & reporting software.

However, we are always on the look-out for cost savings. Our latest project involves consolidation of meter operator and data collection contracts for Biffa’s larger electricity supplies. Total savings to date from direct refunds and avoided charges run to over £350,000 and are still rising.
