Energy saving initiatives: how much are you using?

EnergyGraph1

If your company or organisation is thinking of introducing energy saving initiatives, measure how much you are currently using before you start “tinkering”.

Unless you know what you are using and what it is costing you, you won’t know what impact the changes that you implement have made. Measurements can be as simple as just reading the existing meter for a long enough period to be able to see what the normal usage trend is, or it can be as complicated as replacing the existing meter with a smart meter (don’t try and do this yourself!) which automatically delivers the usage data to your email address.

The data graphed here shows that almost half way through the measurement period some action (hopefully intentional!) caused a definite reduction in the amount of energy being used at all times, known as the base load.  If we hadn’t measured energy usage before the energy saving initiative had been implemented, we couldn’t have quantified the saving that had been made.
